The Sony PlayStation 2, more commonly known as the PlayStation 2 or PS2, is a home video game console developed and manufactured by Sony Computer Entertainment. The second installment of the PlayStation console series, it was first released in Japan on March 4, 2000, and competed with the sixth generation of consoles, which included the Sega Dreamcast, Microsoft Xbox, and Nintendo GameCube. It was officially discontinued on January 4, 2013, almost thirteen years after it was first released, and giving it one of the longest video game console runs. It's successor, the PlayStation 3, was released in 2006.
