Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars is a role-playing game developed by Squaresoft for the SNES. The game is notable for being the first Mario-based role-playing game, and was the final game developed by Squaresoft under their original deal with Nintendo and the final Mario game to be released for the SNES. The game was later re-released under the Virtual Console service for Wii, marking the first time the game has officially been released in Europe and Australia as well as the 250th game released for Virtual Console in North America.

Although Super Mario RPG does not have a sequel, it received two spiritual successors in the form of the Paper Mario and Mario & Luigi games.

Set in the Mushroom Kingdom and featuring its cast of well-known characters, this adventure RPG begins with a familiar scenario: Mario must rescue Princess Toadstool from Bowser. However, a mysterious new enemy named Smithy soon appears, and Mario and Bowser are forced to fight as allies for the first time in their long history. In the quest to defeat their powerful new foe, they’ll journey across a wide variety of locations (a town of mining moles, a tropical forest, a thundering waterfall–just to name a few) and tackle a mix of obstacles requiring both expert timing and strategy to overcome. Along the way, they’ll gain experience and grow more powerful, while also meeting new characters whose unique abilities will be needed to take on Smithy and his gang. Striking a perfect balance of traditional RPG elements and the action-packed game play Mario is famous for, it’s easy to see why this title has earned “legendary” status!

Story

At the beginning of the game Bowser kidnaps Princess Peach and Mario travels to his castle to save her. During the battle, however, a giant sword named Exor falls from the sky and into Bowser's Keep, destroying the Star Road in the process, and capturing it in the name of the Smithy Gang. Mario's goal is to defeat Smithy and his minions and collect the seven Star Pieces in order to restore the Star Road.

Gameplay

Super Mario RPG combines elements of the platforming games with a turn-based battle system. Enemies are encountered on the overworld rather than have random encounters. During battle the four face buttons on the SNES controller allow the player to access each menu: A for attacks, B for running away or defending, X for items, and Y for special attacks. Super Mario RPG also incorporates more interactive battle mechanics in the form of "Timed Hits"; by pressing the button at the proper timing, the attack is more powerful. Only three characters can be in battle at a time, and Mario must be one of them.

Out of battle players traverse the overworld in an isometric view as Mario. In the menu players can equip items (armor, weapon, and accessory for each character), view a map of the world, view each characters' stats, and switch around the battle party.
