Final Fantasy VII Remake is a complete recreation of the successful 1997 role-playing game Final Fantasy VII. Contrary to what the name implies, it is actually a sequel to the original that utilizes time travel for its plot and makes significant changes to the familiar storyline. The game is also different in terms of presentation, utilizing fully 3D environments and battles becoming real time action sequences rather than the active time battle system. Due to the scope of the project, the game is being released in episodic segments: the first part, set in the eclectic town of Midgar, was released on April 10, 2020 for the PlayStation 4.

PlayStation Store Description

The world is under the control of Shinra, a corporation controlling the planet's life force as mako energy. In the city of Midgar, Cloud Strife, former member of Shinra's elite SOLDIER unit now turned mercenary lends his aid to the Avalanche resistance group, unaware of the epic consequences that await him.

FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE is a reimagining of the iconic original with unforgettable characters, a mind-blowing story, and epic battles. The story of this first, standalone game in the FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE project covers up to the party’s escape from Midgar, and goes deeper into the events occurring in Midgar than the original FINAL FANTASY VII.

Gameplay

The player alternates between exploring their surroundings in 3D and battle monsters in fixed encounters. During battle players can switch freely between party members, shifting the camera's focus to where that character was rather than swapping their positions. Combat takes place in real time, similar to Final Fantasy XV, with the active time battle gauge being a timer that fills up as the party attacks monsters. Once filled, the gauge activates and the player can select commands in rapid succession that enemies cannot counter in time.
