The Final Fantasy series is a long-running series of role-playing games developed and published by Square Enix. It is the most internationally popular RPG series in the world and, along with Dragon Quest, is one of the most successful franchises owned by Square Enix.
Series Overview
Conceptualized by Hironobu Sakaguchi, the Final Fantasy series is a collection of unrelated, independent titles that feature distinct settings, characters, and even gameplay systems. This focus on original content has allowed the series to maintain a fresh feeling with each iteration well into it's thirtieth year.
Recurring themes and traits do persist among the series, however. The duality of light and darkness, idealistic protagonists pitted against nihilistic villains, and the intermingling of magic and technology are present in each title. Additionally, the animal species of the ostrich-like Chocobo and the impish Moogle have become mascots of the series, appearing in some capacity since their respective debuts in nearly each subsequent game.
